Captain Barbell was created by Mars Ravelo and artist Jim Fernandez in Pinoy Komiks of May 1963. He had several alter egos, from Tenteng/Teng-teng, or Enteng. Depending on the version, before transforming into the superhero Captain Barbell, he is often a weak, poor, and sickly young man or an orphan. Mars Ravelo was inspired by American superheroes, and Captain Barbell/Tenteng shared many similarities in moments and powers to Western characters. His origin is one of helping a stranger, and due to his selfless good deed, Tenteng was awarded a magical golden barbell. When lifting the barbell and shouting "Captain Barbell!", he would transform into the muscular superhero many Filipinos are familiar with. To transform back, would often mean releasing of losing the barbell and reverting back to his weaker human form. Captain Barbell has been shown in two costumes: one where he is shirtless, and in a newer version, he is depicted with the famous yellow costume.
